  • RSS All The Way

I saw this story today about Apples News starting a daily newsletter. Which I’ve found amusing since I’ve moved all email newsletters to Feedbins terrific email newsletter feature. I then remembered that Apples News is essentialy built on RSS feeds and really the internet is just RSS all the way down. Long live RSS!

  • Onboarding

Work is building out the team, which has meant a new desk location for me, a new “view.” (Side note the office view is very good). I’ve been thinking about onboarding today and how one day or the first few days can be so essential to how the work is viewed from a new hire. Over time everyone will sort everything out, team dynamics, processes, etc. But at the start you have a chance to give them a leg up. Instead of months to sort out the details on their own, a good onboarding could widdle that time down to days or even hours. Good people,on your team, combined with good hires should only take at most days to incorroparate your team, not weeks or months. If you’re having trouble it might not be the hiree, it could be your onboarding process. Happy to see my co-worker knows how to onboard and while one person can take on most of the onboarding work, the rest of the team needs to be involved too. It’s a team after all.

  • Friendly Ghost?

A friend recently moved into a new house. Over the past week he’s shared, with a group of friends, stories about the ghost in the house. The first, a perfectly functional key that was bent overnight while on the counter. His dog, that is not know to bark, quickly scurrying into rooms to bark and then just as quickly receding to the front door to leave. Today was a story of hearing furniture in the next room being picked up and down then sliding across the room. But, the room is empty as he just moved in. 👻 😱 From afar this situation has been amusing, hearing new stories and joking about a new ghost friend. However, if I was in the same situation, I would be very uncomforatable. Consistently trying to find a new reason that everything is fine. Nothing to see hear move along.

  • CSS Grid

I’ve been spending more time using CSS Grid recently and enjoying it. If you give CSS Grid a try I recommend giving a 12 column layout a go. Plenty of flexibility allowing for halfs, thirds, quarters. Resources to check out: Grid by Example, CSS Tricks, Learn CSS Grid and MDN. Side note, if you haven’t used Firefox’s dev tools in a while they’re worth a look. Great tools for CSS Grid in particular.

  • All the things USB-C please

I would love all the things to be USB-C for charging. At this point I’ve stopped buying anything that is not USB-C. But my iphone is 3years old this fall, so guess who’s getting a new battery later this year!

This year’s iPhone should be the last with Lightning

eventually the benefits of switching to USB-C will outweigh the benefits of staying with Lightning

The biggest benefit of switching to USB-C is obviously having the same charger handle your laptop, tablet, and phone. It’s just so much more convenient.

  • Have customers, will travel for product.

I found this article at The Verge about the individuals who travel across the USA finding discounted items and reselling them on Amazon fastanating. It got me thinking about all the items large merchants have that they are unable to sell but people apparently want. No wonder some of these retailers (eg kmart etc) have so much trouble, they can’t reach the right customer and in this case an entire sub industry has been then created on a tech giant to get the product to the customer. Of course you could argue that other retailers that are profitable (eg Target) are so large that the goods they are clearing out are percentages of percentages so these goods do not matter. Either way, it’s a very interesting business case and situation.

    How to be honorable:

Honorable humans used to own slaves.

“Honorable” has always been measured against the current culture, not an absolute of what we’re capable of.

Over time, then, as the culture changes, what used to be honorable becomes dishonorable.
